Retrofit Coordinator

In the simplest of terms Retrofit Coordinators are the project managers who oversee domestic retrofit projects from start to finish.

They are experienced professionals who support homeowners, residents and landlords to achieve their retrofit goals.

Alex has been a Retrofit Coordinator since before the role was ever formalised, having managed over 100 whole house retrofits for the able to pay market as the owner of multiple award winning retrofit specialist Bright Green Homes LLP  for over 15 years.

Also a Director of The Green Building Partnership delivering the Low Energy Action Fund in 2013 and the Green Deal Pioneer Places Project in Brighton & Hove in 2014, subsequently a Director of award winning Local Community Energy Group Brighton & Hove Energy Services Co. (BHESCo), and also a Director of Retrofitworks delivering retrofit services nationwide.

Since early 2024 we closed the installer business Bright Green Homes LLP, after a tough few years post Covid to focus on delivering Retrofit projects at a larger scale across the South East.

Working with Local Authorities, Housing Associations, Local Community Groups and Energy Companies we have an expanded mission - to improve the energy efficiency of housing not one house at a time but in the hundreds and then the thousands, making a difference for people across the South East and further afield.

What do we do?

We oversee the professionals involved in any retrofit project, from the homeowner themseves, the funder (if thats different - for example for government funded work on properties) the architects, energy assessors, contractors, construction managers, structural engineers, building control & planners. Ultimately making the process run as smoothly as possible while also achieving the very highest standards.

PAS 2030 & PAS2035

For government funded work this specifically entails following the PAS2030 & now the PAS2035 standard for Retrofitting domestic buildings. This is a key requirement for any publicly funded retrofit projects and requires the use of a suitably qualified professional with a Level 5 Retrofit Coordination & Risk Management qualification.

A wide and varied role here ranging from oversight of contractors, advice and compliance for Building Regulations, PAS2035, CDM Regulation 2015, Building Safety Act 2024, and over all project management.

There are many ways a retrofit can be funded - either through private funds of a householder - often as part of a larger program of works such as a new loft conversion, rear or side extension, or even a Whole House Renovation. Alex has extensive experience of over a hundred of projects like these ranging in size from fairly small to large quarter of a million pound renovations - see our portfolio page for examples

Or there are the grants and funding schemes which started fairly poorly with the ill thought through Green Deal in the early 2010s but have since expanded to include the Local Authority Delivery Scheme (LAD), The Home Upgrade Grant (HUG), The Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) and the widely adopted Energy Company Obligation Scheme (ECO) which is now into its 4 revision.
